silk flower hairpin update

I totally underestimated the difficulty and TIME this task takes. They are totally worthy of $150+ price tags. I feel slightly defeated by my first attempt but I have not given up yet.

My DIY empire

All that I have decided to take on for this wedding is finally weighing on me. Actually, I'm just starting to doubt my ability. When I think about it, my head starts to spin. These are the moments when my OCD really shines.
• invitations: designing, printing, calligraphy (not yet self taught)
• flowers: ordering everything wholesale, decorations & table settings (I'm also building the containers from raw wood), corsages, boutonniere, my bouquet
• my hair
• my makeup
• my nails
• my accessories: hair pin, shoe adornment
• cake topper
It wasn't really by choice but default because of the remote location. I would gladly have paid to have the flowers, hair and makeup done but the interviews/trials I had were less than encouraging.

Floral Hairpin mission

If you are even thinking about putting a flower in your hair, you have to have seen the work of www.kautumn.com everywhere.

Her flowers/pins are beautiful but way too pricey for my cheap frugal self.

I want to put a flower in my hair. I want to make a statement. I want it to survive the entire wedding and then some. I'm not having my bouquet preserved, so at least my floral hairpin can be a keepsake.

Armed with

and confident in my problem-solving abilities, I feel confident I can make this myself...I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Poor Matt is in charge of constructing the cake topper, so my own accessories are the least I can do.

Something new, something blue

I already know that Nayoung thinks these earrings are too delicate for my dress and wedding-day fashion, but I don't care. I'm going to buy them and wear them on my wedding day. I keep thinking about them. I love the aquas (I am slightly obsessed with aquamarine jewelry), and I think they're just the right mix of classic and funky.

Double digits

I cannot believe that my wedding countdown is in the double digits. Where did all the time go?

I just finished designing my invitations, which have not even been printed. My diet and exercise are AWOL. But our wedding bands came in yesterday! I am a little bummed that Gelin Abaci does not make a coordinating band to my engagement ring but I will love it anyway.

Holy crap I still have so much to do!

Bridals by Lori

Bridals by Lori is the largest bridal store in Atlanta. Beneath the leopard print wallpaper exterior (actually just in the bathroom), the place is amazing. They really do have an extensive selection of designer gowns and Marta, who I had an appointment with, was amazing. I can't even begin to rave about how knowledgeable and helpful she was. After 3 hours of trying this and that and this again, I found THE dress. It was the dress that made be want to be a bride's bride for the first time ever. It was a Vera Wang I had never seen and I even found a veil I wanted.

I knew I had to walk away from the situation to think clearly because I was ready for the largest impulse buy to date. So, my mother and I went to have a bite. I needed to let it settle in...the $5000 price tag. The dress was $3900 and you do get a 12% discount if you purchase the day of your appointment. But after tax, the hundreds in alterations, the $400 veil...OUCH. But it made me feel like a bride.

Then I started thinking about all the over stuff I've been coveting: a new laptop, a .mac account, LASIK,...and what Matt's been coveting and I felt guilty for even considering the purchase. I felt even more guilty because I knew my mom and Matt would not even hate me for it. I would be left alone to do all the self-loathing for my 15 minutes of Cinderella.

In the end, I went back to Bridals by Lori and did what I went there for in the first place. I went to the bridesmaid floor and tried on the Badgley Mischka dresses. They were awesome—they fit great and the fabric was heavy, not cheap feeling at all (like my previous bridesmaid attire experiences). And my fav...I bought it. And another one as well. I can't say that the 2 purchases balanced out the hole that was left from turning my back on Vera but it helped.

Valentine's Day Gift Guide, continued

What could be more romantically decadent than a double fudge chocolate cake--especially when it's delivered right to your door? That's just what GoCakeGo.com promises, and even offers a choice of five yummy-sounding cakes, in case a chocolate-on-chocolate version isn't what you have in mind.

OK, it's not very romantic, but I love these retro-looking bread boxes, and they come in awesome colors. This one is from Typhoon US and also comes in vanilla cream, diner blue, buick red, maine blue, limousine black and limousine white.

I'm a sucker for all things aquamarine. It's my birthstone, but there's something unique and surprising about blue gemstones. This is a rare moss aquamarine, available by special order only from Sonya Renee Jewelry in Dallas. I adore it for its simplicity and unique shade--it's not something you see every day.
